I may have just purchased a car, my first one, and it is not the most common car to buy as a first.
Post of my car will follow when I get it.
I am interested to see how many of you started with something really unusual.
Post your unusual first car, bonus points for a photo.

The engine upgrades and that it was early 2000s and everyone at my school drove foreign cars is the only thing that makes it odd. Otherwise it's a pretty normal first truck/suv.
(and 2 pics = double bonus points?)

Not crazy, but my first was a 68 Mustang. I bought it with summer work warnings when I was 15. This was in 1990. I still have it.

Not many 15 year olds get a chance to buy a 305 engine'd 77 Firebird Esprit from their aunt for $1500.
But I did.
It was 1996 and just before my 16th birthday I started making payments to her, and it was delivered to my parent's driveway a few months later. I believe the stripes make it unusual... never seen them on a Firebird in that fashion/color combo.

Nice, what motor?!
I have a 68 Montego with a Ford 302 in it.

I had a 59 Bus as my first, at 9. I had this as one of my first real (read water cooled) cars. 81 Audi 5000 Turbo in 95. 57K original miles

I had a 72 Gran Torino. That wasn't very unusual at the time, but fairly alien to people these days.

Straight 6 200 CI. Yeah baby.

Mine was a 1985 manual sentra wagon
then got a 1991 hyundai S'coupe, then a 1991 honda civic hb, then a 1991 cavalier z24
yeah 1991 was a good year for cars :)

Yep. I bought a car some young guy had wrecked before me and probably beat to pulp, engine/gearbox wise. "some" rust work, new front end off another car and a few other spares from a car we had standing and it's now mine, 1 year and counting so far.
(still wearing the dented door and rear quarter panel scratches from his shenigans)

You know what?
I have to give you credit for not swapping in a V8 and keeping it original.

I bought a 1989 Dodge Aries K car for a dollar in 1998. It was magical with that oil burner Chrysler 2.2 NA with the Bosch throttle-body fuel injection with the fuel hoses that were dry-rotted and squirting raw fuel onto the head. It also had a leaky gas tank (for the same reason) and a column shifter that would sometimes slip into reverse from drive on a really bumpy road.
BUT, it would go 55Mph in first gear, would take a 5 foot jump in stride annnnd do "power" slides around gravel roads with aplomb.
The entire back seat had a subwoofer box in it, so I considered it a 2 or 3 seater. (It had a bench front seat lol.)

Not mine, but similar.
Mine was an 88 Chevy Suburban. Already an odd car for a first, but to make it weirder it had a Trailmaster conversion done. This was done similar to a conversion van so it had a raised roof, super plush bucket chairs, a table, wood everywhere, blinds on the window, and a rear seat that folded into a bed. Now granted, when I got the truck in 97 it was all torn, broken, gouged, what have you. It also had an aftermarket gas tank that held 50 gallons so luckily gas was a lot cheaper back then.
Got it for 500 bucks, drove it everywhere and abused it more than any vehicle deserves for ~2 years then sold it for 500 bucks.

1935 LV81 Volvo, still have it, I drove it down the dirt road from our house to the public road, with my brother and sister inside, parked it and waited for the bus. I started to drive them when I could reach the pedals standing up. I would get it going and then just stand on the clutch and brake with both feet. Coming home was harder, it was uphill but I once I got it in gear I could just keep the gas on and kill it when we got home.

'87 CRX Si. Pretty sweet high school commuter/chick wagon.

Still in the saddle, owned it for 6 years.

That is a great first car! how much was it ? surely those can't be cheap?
![]() 01/24/2014 at 15:19 |

Not cheap at all back in 08, and with a tax rate at 180% here in Denmark I gave around 120,000 dollars for it, or what would be 550,000 DKR(Danish Kroners)

I'm only putting mine here because they're so rare on the road nowadays (with good reason). I had a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix LJ 5-door hatch. It was terrible, in virtually every way a car could be terrible. No pics, though. I'm trying to forget.

I was given a 1976 Pinto Wagon as a project car.

Damn, I wish I had that kind of money to spend on a car.. espescially my first.

Not when you are forced into family business at the very day you got 18 years old. But yeah ofq, It has its benefits surely!
![]() 01/24/2014 at 15:28 |

Stock...for now. It needs to be restored and has been parked for several years. I have been trying to think of what I want to do with it. It isn't a rare car so I don't feel too bad about messing with it a bit.

My first love was a '54 F100 with the sweet side-mounted spare like this guy:

Well you could always drop in a 302, or a 351. you can get some crazy power out of them.

Stolen picture but this was mine. 1994 Opel Kadett Convertible. 1.6L, 5 speed, white with white top. Learned to drive a stick on it and it was pretty fun to drive. I bought it in 2005.

Yup. My dad has. 1964 Comet Cyclone with a high output 302 in it. Part of me thinks it would be fun to drop a turbo 6 in there. You know, because it was a 6.

Mine was an '88 Supra. N/A and a total piece of crap, but it was fun.

There was one like that for sale near my a few years ago... it wasn't you, was it? I walked away after I saw it was an auto.
![]() 01/25/2014 at 03:05 |
|
First and second. Both 5 speeds, both too slow to get out of their own way... Between them, they had 8 cylinders, and 16 valves... which flowed quite nicely into my third car which met those counts on its own.
![]() 01/25/2014 at 03:05 |

No way in hell would I buy an auto. :)
![]() 01/25/2014 at 03:06 |

Oh, and the S-10 was first, the 80 was second. That wasn't clear in the picture.

my first was an '88 CRX. sweet ride!
![]() 01/25/2014 at 05:13 |

Okay maybe not, let's just call it a complete lack of ability to drive normally. This was his previous car..

05 saabaru. Not super rare or anything, but not common either. 2 liter turbo with 4eat.

So you know this person and their bad driving habits, and you still buy their castoffs? Are you being blackmailed or is it a family member?
![]() 01/25/2014 at 14:19 |
|
It was dirt cheap, and since we had all the parts around and the tools to fix it, i got a car way cheaper then buying some other ruined-but-running wreck :)

Fair enough.

FIRST OF ALL I need a pick of that Cyclone. My 68 Montego has the Cyclone GT Package, but it isn't a full Cyclone. In 68/69 there was a Mercury Cyclone as a standalone model.
It would be kind of fun to do a turbo 6.
Maybe a Volvo T6...because ford/volvo connection hahaha.
Otherwise you really can't go wrong with a 302. Especially if you have experience on one from your dad's Mercury.

One of these, within "car owned by you and actually driving" - I owned the Rover first, but it wasn't rebuilt at the time, and had been driving various family cars before then.

Legal disclaimer : Not mine pictured above, but it looked EXACTLY like it. Same color inside and out and those horrible wheels too.

Mine was absolutely usual. A 92 Saturn SC2....
But my daughter's will be most unusual. It's either going to be another 7, or a prototype.
